Why Cuttlefish Inspire Us

Cuttlefish communicate through light – instantly, clearly, and in incredibly rich detail. They reshape patterns in real time, layer signals for different audiences, and even use polarised light for secure messaging.

That natural mastery of light mirrors what we strive for. Just as cuttlefish use light to connect with each other, we use light-based technology to connect people, data, and ideas.

Fast. Adaptive. Intelligent.
Where light meets logic.

Our History

We've been here, we're here now and we'll be here tomorrow.

From Dial-Up Pioneers to Modern Fibre & Hosting

Net Communications (now widely known as Netcom) has been bringing Norfolk online since the very first days of the public internet. Long before broadband and smartphones, we were helping homes and businesses in Norwich discover e-mail, the web and online services – and we've been innovating ever since.

Today Netcom and NetcomHosting run modern fibre, wireless and hosting platforms for homes, businesses, holiday parks and events across East Anglia and beyond. But our story starts on a Norwich street in the mid-1990s.

1995

Building the Infrastructure

Behind the scenes, Net Communications was investing in the connectivity that would underpin the early service:

  • BTnet leased-line connectivity – our BTnet "Intention to Buy" forms from late 1995 show the first dedicated high-speed links being ordered into Eastbourne Place
  • NET-COM.COM domain registration – in 1996 the company registered the net-com.com domain name, with administrative contact listed as Simon Gurney at Net Communications

This early investment meant our Norwich customers weren't simply relying on congested national dial-up services – they were riding on one of the region's first locally-managed internet backbones.

1996

Putting Norwich on the Web

As more people discovered the web, Net Communications moved beyond simple dial-up accounts:

  • Business internet and web design – local firms started coming to Netcom not just for connectivity but for complete web presences
  • Early e-commerce and global reach – an Evening News business feature profiled Simon and Net Communications as part of the "new breed of internet entrepreneurs"

"The First E-mail in a Bottle"

One of the more memorable stories from this period is what the local press dubbed "the first E-mail in a bottle".

On holiday on the south coast, Simon placed his e-mail address and a promise of a bottle of champagne inside a corked wine bottle and launched it into the sea. Weeks later it was discovered on a beach near Exmouth; the finder e-mailed Simon, who kept his promise and sent the champagne.

"Exmouth man finds out that E-mail message in a bottle was bubbly!" – capturing exactly what Net Communications was trying to do: make the internet real, fun and accessible.

1999

Growing with Norfolk's Digital Economy

By the end of the decade Net Communications was firmly established as one of Norwich's key internet companies:

  • Full-time and part-time roles supporting dial-up customers, managing servers and building websites
  • Business press pieces about the "net gain" for companies embracing online sales
  • Expanded portfolio of websites, hosting and e-mail solutions
2000s

Broadband, Hosting and Business Connectivity

As broadband replaced dial-up, Netcom evolved:

  • Moving customers from modems to ADSL and leased-line broadband
  • Offering website development, e-commerce and hosting as standard services
  • Becoming a recognised Nominet member and UK domain registrar

Throughout this period Net Communications remained an independent, Norwich-based provider.

2010s

Netcom & NetcomHosting Today

Today, under the Netcom and NetcomHosting brands, the business has grown beyond the original Eastbourne Place shop front:

  • Connectivity – business fibre, point-to-point links, rural broadband and complex multi-site networks
  • Hosting & cloud – modern hosting platforms and e-mail solutions through NetcomHosting
  • Wi-Fi and events – large-scale Wi-Fi deployments for holiday parks, estates and events
  • Support & consultancy – ongoing technical support, security advice and infrastructure planning
2025

30th Anniversary

2025 marks our 30th year in business — three decades of continuity, growth and service in Norfolk and beyond. This milestone underscores our commitment: we've been here, we're here now and we'll be here tomorrow.

In this new chapter, we're pleased to announce the appointment of Ashley Cooper as General Manager, bringing fresh energy to the business while preserving the technical excellence and customer-first ethos that built the company.

Alongside Ashley, Edward Tucker joins as Director, adding strategic depth to our leadership team. Together with Managing Director Simon Gurney, they are steering the company into the future.

In short: we've grown into a mature, resilient provider — yet we're still the local team you can talk to.

Looking Ahead

At Netcom we believe good service shouldn't involve techno-jargon. Here's how we'll support you going forwards:
